Silvia Levenson Presentation

Thursday, March 28, 2019 7:30 PM Scottsdale Ranch Clubhouse 10585 N. 100th St. Scottsdale, AZ

On Thursday evening, Arizona Glass Alliance will very proudly host a presentation by the internationally known glass sculptor, Silvia Levenson. Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Silvia was a veteran protestor for the poor while still in her teens. Unfortunately a repressive government took power in Argentina in the 70’s and approximately 30,000 people were killed, including members of Silvia’s own family. Silvia immigrated to Italy in 1980, where she has lived ever since and pursued her own very personal artistic vision exploring issues of war and peace, violence and love, repression and freedom.

Silvia has had a very distinguished career, having received the Rakow Commission from the Corning Museum in 2004 and the Venice Glass Prize in 2016. Silvia has taught at Pilchuck and been visiting artist at numerous venues around the world, including Corning and the Canberra School of Art in Canberra, Australia. Silvia’s work has been shown at major galleries both in the United States and throughout Europe. Examples of Silvia’s work can be found at museums in the U.S. such as the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Corning Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX, as well as the Museo del Vidrio in Argentina and the Museo del Vetro in Murano, Italy. Presently Silvia’s show “Missing Identity”, which explores the situation of 500 children abducted during the dictatorship in Argentina, has traveled from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Washington, DC, Portland, Barcelona, Paris, Riga, Tallinn and Venice. An example of Silvia’s work entitled “Until death do us part II”, which is in the Mint Museum collection, is shown below.

Personally, Silvia is a very warm and charming person who exemplifies the “love” side of her work, as well as an artist who creates sculpture which is both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually challenging, and we are delighted to have her join us.
